Hello,

My parents just moved into a new house and want me to setup a reef tank for them. I have a 40 breeder with a sump I was using to grow out a big group of Africian cichlids I can give to them. What's the best method to clean the tank/sump/plumbing out ?

Thanks in advance!

First be certain that the tank has not been used previously with any copper treatments as this can affect future inhabitants. If not I would clean it using some citric acid or vinegar in normal water (no need to use the precious RODI during this step). You can typically find it at grocery stores or Amazon. Fill it up with water, add some citric acid or vinegar and let soak/run through your plumbing if you plan to reuse that. You will notice algae and mineral buildup then should wipe easily off. Give it a scrub then rinse well. IMO citric acid works fantastic and is less "harsh" than vinegar. Hope this helps some and best of luck on your new tank.
