I'm looking to get a new return pump for my 65g tank. Currently I'm running a Waveline DC4000. It's rated at 1050gph. I have 5ft of vertical line and 1 ft of horizontal. I will also be feeding a gfo reactor and a chiller which requires 600gph pass through. I'd like to have 600gph through the sump as well. With 1300gph required flow and the head loss, would the M1 be enough or should I get the l1?

I have the m1 and wish I spent the extra money on the l1. You can always turn it down and if you ever add on or upgrade you will have enough pump to do so.

You can only turn it down so much. L1 would be overkill. I am running a M1 on qt tank. 50g with 40b sump and have to keep pump turned down otherwise drain makes way too much noise. Single 1.5" drain.

I have the vector L1 and have been using it for about 3 months on a 120 gallon tank I'm glad i didn't get the M1 because it would probably be running on 100% as opposed to me running my L1 at 70%... but keep in mind you lose flow if there are a lot of bends in your pipes.

My first thought was that the M1 would be plenty of pump for your needs, and it is.
But the wisdom of buying a larger controllable pump and running it at 50%-60% has merit too.

I completely agree it is you're call but both pumps are amazing I'm sure whichever you choose will be sufficient
