Hello All,

I recently picked up a beautiful massive scoly from my LFS. Since adding to my tank it has not expanded fully and have kept it's mouth completely wide open.

Currently I have it just off the sand bed about 18" deep. I am running 3x AI Primes over my 75g. Flow is moderate in this location.

pH 8-8.1
Temp 78F
alk 8.6
Mg 1550
Ca 520

Any thoughts?

I would put it on the sandbed so it can spread out. Also, looks like a bit too much flow on the left side, its pulled in a little compared to the right side.

Is it a new tank? What are the nitrate and phosphate levels?

Tank is about a year old, lots of other LPS/SPS and Softies doing great.

Nitrates are 9.0, Phos is undetectable.

You have yours at similar location as mine.
How was it acclimated and for how long?
Too much flow can trigger this as will hunger. Low flow and lower light intensity is best

Admittedly did not acclimate it as far as lighting figuring that being lower in the tank it would be ok with my normal strength lighting. It's been in the tank 5 days now.

That will be a contributor. If hunger, drop a few pieces of mysis shrimp in mouth and see if responds

That looks like a trachy to me, and a pretty one at that. They like/appreciate some phosphates.

Also, make sure you’re target feeding it once a week with some meaty foods.

Edit: make sure to turn off all flow for a little when you target feed. They can sometimes be slow eaters, in my experience.

You’re 100% right it’s a trachy - I was looking at the wrong label in the store and initially thought it was a huge scoly (and realized my mistake when I got the counter and it was $200 instead of $100 hah)

I moved it to a corner with more room, less flow and less light and it is looking great. Thanks all!
