I am going back to school in the Fall, so I am going to be buying an IM nuvo 10 gallon. As for natural bacteria I want to get this bonsai frag set up, but it doesn’t have much surface are for bacteria to grow on. Does anyone have any recommendations for this tank specifically? I want to get the inTank media basket and the reefglass protein skimmer. Would it best to put some rock rubble in the back sump area? Would rock rubble, sand, media basket, and the bonsai I attached a pic of be enough?

The rock rubble is going too help but your sand is mostly going to contain the bacteria.
The 2nd chamber could be used for the rubble rock and protein skimmer

I would get something like seachem matrix instead of rubble rock for a tank like that. Also imo a skimmer on this size tank is completely unnecessary. Regular water changes will be your best path to success in a tank this size.
