I have a fowlr and instant ocean powder buffer my ph is at about 8.1 or 8 how should I bring it up? When I do water changes? Or just take out buckets and mix in buffer or what?

deboy69 is right. Your ph is within normal range. Mine will drift from 8.2/8.4 down to 8 over a lil time. I have 4 nems and they are all fine.

I wouldn't. That pH is fine

KCCO

I fully agree....even with an anemone.

However, if you are insistent, make your own ALK solution by first baking 2 1/4 cups of regular old baking soda on a cookie sheet for one hour at 350 degrees. This "converts" the baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to sodium carbonate. Sodium carbonate has a slightly higher pH. Now dissolve this cooked baking soda in one gallon of RO/DI water and use as you would any two-part.

I shoot for stability. Whatever ur tank wants to run at it will. If its a lil low, bump it up. But if a nem is acclimated and goes in your tank with a ph of say 8- it should settle in just fine. Drastic changes, or doses to adjust numbers, would / could hurt things more than it running steady at 8.0

I agree with what's posted above. All good advice here. I don't even bother testing for pH.

Ill tack on here too. your PH is perfectly fine. it would be perfectly fine at 7.8 even. same with 8.2. what you DONT want is for it to bounce from one end of the spectrum to the other quickly. I have seen MANY successful reefs with a 7.8 PH.

Ok and I have some macro algae in my sump, thanks everyone. And do I need calcium and magnesium and all that? Like would I have to dose any of that?

Do you currently test test Cal and Mag?? With a FOWLR i dont think these are going to be much consuming those. Water changes should maintain good levels for a fish tank.

i dose Alk and Cal. But my tank has 50+ chalices, 50+ zoos, and 4 nems. Dont think a nem will consume a lot of these trace elements. Keep it simple. Water changes until you decide to add things that will take stuff from the water.

I agree with everyone else about the ph. Mine stays at 7.8-8.1 throughout the day and my corals are fine. Stability is the key. Good luck!
