Red Sea
130 gallon display
30 gallon sump
Separate pump from roller chamber plumbed to refugium through uv, which overflows to skimmer and back to return pump so I don’t recycle sterilized water.
Removed factory sock chamber and installed the baffle to separate roller and refugium.
Removed factory Ato chamber and plumbed from garage for awc and ato.

My sump/refugium is as basic as they get. It's a 30 gallon extra high. It has a deep sand bed and rock. The return pump just sits on some of the rock on the left side of the tank. The right side is where the drain is, which is a reverse durso to cut down on noise. Gracilaria grows on the rock.

It's super simple but it works well.
That's awesome. Its literally just another display tank as your sump lol. I may have to steal that idea. Does the algae do a good job of removing nutrients?

Yes, but I also have algae in my display also and my system is designed to run the nutrients high. I have softies and hardy LPS.

This was when I first started setting up my refugium. I run a skimmer only no socks. Refugium is now full of live rock, micro algae, sponges and other critters to take care of the detritus.

Interesting. Why prefer it over filter socks?

How long do you typically leave things in the acclimation box?
I switched from socks to fleece rollers, particularly the Klir-4, and absolutely love it. The biggest advantage is that as a small section of fleece gets full , it is then rolled out of the water, where it's now unable to break down, dissolve, and release nutrients into your tank.

The biggest thing I noticed was how because it removed algae/food/poop so quickly, and how it did it via optical sensors measuring when it was clogged up, my nutrient levels stayed incredibly consistent regardless of how I fed, if I blew algae off my rocks to get into the water column to filter out, etc. It's like a dynamic way of mechanical filtration.

In all honesty, I did it for the laziness factor. Changing a roll of fleece every 3-6 weeks sounded way better than changing filter floss or socks frequently. These were just huge added bonuses.

Thank you. We ordered the acrylic from Jax Racks he has kits for 40b tanks and we basically ordered 2 of his kits and set them up so we could do the left & right drains with the center returns. He mails everything and you just have to glue it all together & silicone it in the tank. He's got quite a few options and he is good to work with.

Actually he did not do anything to end up in the sump except live a long time after his tank mates. He belonged to a friend who was keeping their tank up just for him. They asked me if I knew anyone who would want him or they were going to return him to a lfs. I knew he was 10-12 years old and hated to think of him going to a lfs so I took him. The problem was I already had a baby oscillaris so couldn't risk putting him in my display and have him kill Ozzie. So that is how Perky ended up in the sump over 2 years ago.
