I'm building an aluminum stand for a 30" x 20" frag tank. I would like to use HDPE for the top, but it's a little pricey. I know I can use plywood but it's not my first choice for looks and water resistance. I don't think I want to use any stone. Any other options for a top people are using?

If your only objections to wood are the look and water resistance, a nice stain (or coat of paint) and a polyurethane top coat should solve both those problems.

You make a good point, and I may go this route (even though I object a tiny bit to the cost of supplies and time involved), I just wanted to see if there's something else out there people are using that works well and is relatively inexpensive. I'm enjoying the start of a new project but all of the little expenses are starting to add up, and quickly.
