My wife and I collect african violets and I just added this one today. It's called Yukako, and was hybridized in Japan. It's a chimera, meaning it carries 2 sets of DNA, resulting in the striped flowers you see. The plant is 9" across, which should cost about $25-30, but I got it for $10 from the president of the local african violet club. I know this has nothing to do with R2R but I'm really excited by this plant!

That's really pretty.....I like orcids too, but I don't have much of a green thumb....My wife either. So I let the weeds do there thing cause I can't kill those. Any more pics of the violets you have? Are some of them rare?

Nothing really too rare. Yukako is probably the rarest I have as only 2 sites I know of have it. It came to the US from Japan a couple years ago and originally sold for $500. The person I got it from paid $80 for hers. I have 19 violets now, some of which are NOIDs (no id's.) Here are some:

Haha, no, no bouquets :-)

In the lounge now. :-)

pretty stuff, my puppy would eat those pronto! The little sucker thinks he is a cow or something.

Love African violets

Looking at the one I keep from my grandmothers funeral.

Never seen the hybrids---- very, very nice.

There are at least 20000-30000 registered hybrids. No one knows exactly how many there are. Most can be had starting around $6 each for regular hybrids, around $15-20 for starter plants of chimeras.

My wife wants a frag of each

The named varieties have to be propagated by leaf or bloom stalk cuttings, so essentially they are fragged too.
