Hi all, I am from Australia if my units are a little weird ;)
This is my first marine tank and I work at an aquarium, so I'm learning fast.
About 3 months ago I decided the best way for me to learn the salt side of the hobby would be to start my own. I haven't looked back since.
I started off with an Aqua One Minireef 150, which is a 55x55x55cm display and came with all Aqua One branded gear: skimmer, RO reservoir built into the the sump with an auto top up unit to match (so glad I have it), return pump, heater and light.
I filled it up with ocean water as we sell it at work.
Added 40kg of the salt and pepper (I wanted straight black but couldn't get my hands on it) argalive live sand which made around 2.5 inches of sand bed. I then got some premium live rock.

**A warning: I love most things considered "pests" for the average reef tank and frequently bring home all sorts of critters from the work live rock tank. Strange and unknown grabs at me.

Shortly after I added more live rock and then some more, choosing rocks with the most life and rescaping as I went. My scape plan was lots of caves ad hidey holes, but a way to see into as many as possible.

My cycle went smoothly and pretty quickly.

Then came CUC. 2 hermits and a Nassarius snail. The hermits quickly outgrew their shells and I gave them 6 new ones to choose from, but they liked none of them of course. So I got 2 new hermits in hope that the competition would cause them to grab the shells so the others wouldnt. The others being smaller could then have their old shells. It worked a treat.

Then came more live rock.

Then I caught a trio of some kind of Glass Perchlet sp. and 3 saltwater Macrobrachium of some kind from the slatwater reaches of the river near my house. They settled in well and I still have the perchlets to this day. The shrimp weren't so well behaved and were extremely aggressive to any new additions. So they became food for a mantis shrimp that I will get to in a later post

Along my journey I have bought a few fish and they have died mysteriously. No visible signs of disease/parasite/anything. They were:
twin/two spot goby
a black and white + regular ocellaris clown pair that I was hoping would work out
I had a coral croucher that was quickly a huge character and ate well plus always sat at the front of the tank which I think I may have a bobbit worm in my sand somewhere which ate it :/

At one point I bought 20kg of "oolitic" sand to increase my sand bed. I added about 6kg of it with a funnel and hose to the front of the tank and have been letting the tank life mix it slowly.

I occasionally do a trip and catch "white glove shrimp" and whatever else is interesting from a nice spot in a bay about 45 min from my house.

So far that hasn't been eaten by other inhabitants and is doing well includes:
Some kind of goby that was tame within the first day of being put in the tank *caught (forgive me if photos aren't lined up)

A Barchin Scorpionfish, Sebastapistes strongia. *bought
IMG_20161217_234518.jpg

A tiny copperband butterfly *caught
received_10154867004696096.jpeg

Some peppermint shrimp *caught
A helicopter shrimp, Urocaridella sp. *bought
Snails galore *caught and bought
At least 25 brittle stars *freebies from work lr tank
A squat lobster that I occasionally see *freebie from work lr tank

I'll add more to the details tomorrow after work. Any inputs are welcome. My tank is very unconventional, but that's the way I love it.

Hi and welcome to R2R! Great write up and I love the unconventional aspect to your build. I'm absolutely fascinated by the idea of being able to catch your own livestock! That sounds really cool. I look forward to seeing more of your tank and learning about it. Thanks for sharing your tank and happy reefing! :)

Aaaalright, while my new Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket is acclimating.

I will have probably missed some things but if you want to know, just ask, I'm more than happy to talk about anything in my tank :)

A few weeks ago I picked up a couple of little Zoa plugs and a single Duncan plug from a shop opened by someone who used to work at the aquarium I currently work at. My girlfriend picked 2/3 Zoas and I picked one of them plus the duncan.

On the weekend just gone I went to a shop's first day of opening about 50 minutes from home with one of my workmates and got some steals:
A pair of Porcelain Crabs

A single Dissapearing Wrasse (so photogenic)
20161219_153954.jpg

A single Trochus snail
A single Sand Sifting Star
Oh and a new filter sock.

Then today my little Southern Pygmy Leatherjacket that I ordered from work turned up but I don't think it's the correct species. I guess time will tell and I just hope it isn't going to turn into a 40+cm long fish :S

Oh and my Nem that I have is one from a display tank at work which split, so I got the smaller portion and if someone could let me know what kind it is that would be appreciated [emoji14]

Here's some photos of other inhabitants
Nassarius Snails *caught (picked up off mud)
20161219_154255.jpg

My first hermit in a shell of a "lazy" tidal stromb shell *bought
20161219_154103.jpg

The recenly bought Trochus snail with some kind of teenie nudibranch on its shell *bought
20161219_154134.jpg

Coral I bought for my croucher to host which didn't work at all. On it is some kind of acro eating snail. I just let it do its thing, I would rather the random snail than the acro aha
20161219_153946.jpg

Some of my "lazy good for nothing" hermits. They do almost nothing all day, and you can even find them "tucked in" the sand. Which is pretty cute. *caught
20161219_153931.jpg

I have ended up with 4 of what I refer to as Collector Urchins. They are always relatively easy to find due to having macro from a different rock or even having one of the previously described hermits stuck but just going with the easy ride. *came with live rock
20161219_154002.jpg

My adorable Nudibranch which seems to have no interest in coral, so winning so far. *caught

Enjoy :)

So the Leatherjacket is already a little terror and has been picking at my brittle stars, snails and tried the prawn which is bigger than it :/

But that is what I get for ordering something I found no aquarium reated info on.

At least it's cute and interesting?

Amazing. It's awesome that you are able to collect things for your tank like that.

That little scorp is gorgeous. I can't tell on my iPad the particular characteristics, but I believe you are correct that it's a Sebastapistes of some sort. If not, I think it's still a small little guy. When I can get to a computer, I'll have a closer look.

Welcome [emoji14]

Before I fly back home from my hometown I will be collecting some snippets of macro algaes, as the beach near my parents is beautiful and covered in it, and if I can get away with it on the plane, maybe a few fish ;)

Update: the "Sandperch" are actually some kind of "Triplefin" and they are eating pieces of cut up fish and blackworms, so that's great.

The tiny scorpion I caught turned out to be a "Fortesque Waspfish" thanks to @lionfishlair and is eating litterally anything I put in the little holder box it is in. It would probably eat nori if I put some in haha.

My bigger scorpion has also upgraded to eating hunks of fish that I just drop near it, which is great!

And I picked up a 4x2x2 tank snd stand today. The sump and hood are being retrieved tomorrow and I have started a thread for it: https://www.reef2reef.com/index.php?threads/282080/

Things are coming along!

So sad tidings. I think the heat may have gotten to the Copperband last week as it went from hungry and healthy to sitting in a corner at the top of the tank to dead in a day last week :/ and today I found one of the Perchlets stuck between a holding box and the glass dead when I got home from work :/

On the good side of things a few weeks ago I got an Onyx Clownfish from someone shutting down their tank and it was only eating flakes or frozen. Now it is eating anything that goes in the tank!
