Hi Reefers <><

I been in the hobby for about ten year before taking a break from getting burned out.
This 24Gal Cube just hit 7 month mark. Took a while to get the post up but here it is.

Tank: Aquatop 24Gallon Cube W Sump
Light: ONE x AI Hydra HD 26 & TWO x AI Prime 16 HD
Return Pump: Hygger HG-915 DC Pump 800GPH
Wavemaker: TWO x AI Nero 3
Skimmer: Tunze Non DC 9004 Skimmer
Rocks: 20lbs x Caribsea Real Reef Rocks
Biological Filtration: MarinePure Ceramic Biomedia & Santa Monica Drop 1.2x UFS
Sand: 3lbs x Caribsea Black Sand
Salt: Fritz RPM Salt
Dosing: ESV B-ionic 2pt dosing, Acro Power
Doser: Bubble Magus BM-TO1

7 month update: (past months below)

-Tank cycling started on July 9th 2022 with dry rock/dry sand/ raw shrimp
-Initial SPS frags were added in September 1st (So far lost 2/10 the initial test frags (2 millepora)
-More SPS frags been added
-Upgrade from 15AIO on September 30th 24 Gal aqua top reef tank + 7Gal sump)

-Corals are now growing/encrusting onto the rock with polyp extension out all day and new colors are coming out
-Fishes are getting fat and happy (6 fishes in total) (two clownfish, hectors goby, mandarine goby, cherub angelfish, cleaners wrasse)
-All CUC doing very good job with tank maintenance (7 snails and 1 red hermit crab)

Tank Parameters:
Salinity: 1.027-1.025 (Milwaukee reflectometer) -tested twice a week now
pH: 8.5- 8.3 (Hanna & Redsea) -Tested randomly twice a week
Alkalinity: 8.5 to 8.9dkH -tested twice a week now (Hanna & redsea) - it got upto 9.9dkH currently at 9.4
Calcium: 375-395 ppm -rarely tested (redsea) Currently at 430
Magnesium: 1400ppm -rarely tested (redsea & aqua forest) Didn’t test This month
Nitrate: 22-9.5 ppm tested weekly now (redsea & nyos) it was around 5 last month currently at 10.5
Phosphate: 0.45- 0.10 tested weekly now (Hanna & redsea) it was around 0.01 last month currently at 0.18

Maintenance:
-Feed the fishes 2 times a day. Down from 3 times a day. Currently feed only Rod’s
-Dose needed supplements (Added BM dosing pump to dose 2pt ESV and amino acid)
Dosage is 10ml each 2pt and 1ml amino daily
-No longer using Carbon
-Added Tunze 9004 Non DC skimmer. It’s not pulling much but helping with aeration
-Still running AWC for 5Gal per 7day
-UTS is starting to get green algae on the surface. LED on for 6hrs only

Changes made:
-Used reef flux medication to get rid of hair algae 2tab.
-Added UV temporary to fight what seems to be the Dino when I stop dosing phytoplankton which set off balance and had massive die off which ONLY covered the sand bed over 3weeks (Only added UV few days when I noticed air bubbles under the sand). Shifted around the sand at night when light was off to suspend Dino into water column
-Did 10Gallon water change when Nitrate and Phosphate went to 40+ppm and 0.5+ppm from algae die off
-Stopped dosing nitrate/phosphate.
-Coralline Algae’s are now spreading on the back wall and on the powerhead unfortunately
-I like to keep Nitrate around 10-15 and phosphate around 0.2 to 0.3

I’ve added some picture of the tank. There is picture with all the lights on this morning for the reference. If you have questions let me know. Thanks <><

The nitrogen cycle completes in 24days without fish and without live rocks for 15Gallon aio tank. Started on July 9th and ended on August 1st. Hope this information is useful. <><

Detail to the setup
-JBJ 15 rimless AIO (12Gallon in total water volume)
- 10lbs of dry Red Sea nano reef tree rocks
- 10lbs of caribsea black sand (contributed nitrate from the beginning)
- Frits RPM salt mixes (had to raise from 1.020 to 1.026 using ato over the cycle)
-Used Red Sea Reef marine care test kit to measure (pH and Alkalinity is not important as of now but usually pH 8.2-8.4 and 8.5 for alkalinity when tested)
-Used Aquatic log app to log each day
-Added 2ml of Microbacter7 1 week after setting up the tank and will continue to use til bottle runs out
-Blow the rocks and sand to suspend anything there maybe once a day
-pH elevated from 8.0 to 8.4 due to aeration from UFS (upflow algae turf scrubber air pump on 24/7)
- Currently don’t have to do a water change since there is no detritus or spike in nitrate but plan to do one this weekend (25%/3Gal) and go pick up some fishes soon
- Wait couple months before start adding SPS corals.

Nitrogen cycle steps and logs:

1. Used half chunk of raw shrimp cut into two pieces from Publix (-$0.50) and let it rot in the tank to seed ammonia

2. took out the shrimp knowing Ammonia test resulting above 2.0ppm

3. Took 12 days to get the ammonia from +2.0ppm to 0.0ppm

4. Nitrite started at 0.5ppm and took extra 9 days to go from 0.5ppm > +1.0ppm > 0.0ppm

5. Nitrate: started at 2.0ppm and took 24 days to go from 2.0ppm > +20.0ppm > 5.0ppm as of yesterday (It was above 20.0 but never above 50.0ppm)

So I’m summary:
3 days of seeding
12 days of ammonia cycle
9 days of nitrite cycle

Finished: ammonia: 0.0ppm nitrite: 0.0ppm nitrate: 5.0ppm pH:8.4 alkalinity:8.5

2 month update: 15G JBJ aio reef tank
Salinity: 1.026-1.025 (Milwaukee reflectometer)
pH: 8.0-8.3 (Redsea)
Alkalinity: 7.7-7.5dkH (Hanna & redsea)
Calcium: 500ppm (redsea)
Magnesium: 1400ppm (redsea & aqua forest)
Nitrate: 1.0-2.0ppm (at highest: 25ppm at lowest: 0.5ppm) (redsea & nyos)
Phosphate: 0.03-0.01 (at highest: .024ppm at lowest 0.00) (Hanna & redsea)
Maintenance:
-Feed the fishes 2 times a day
-test and dose mb7 and phytoplankton
-Repace filter floss every 2-3 days
-Change out carbon
-5Gallon water change biweekly
-Top off ATO
-observe the tank
Changes made:
-Added two clownfishes ( Aug 3rd. 3day after nitrogen cycle)
-Added carbon (Aug 7th. changes out once again on Aug 28th).
-Added two BTA (Aug 10th. testing for water stability) BTA was in bad shape when I got it but it’s recovering well. Currently am planning on removing to better home soon.
-Added bottle of galaxy pod and dosing phytoplankton (Aug 11th).
-First sign of diatom (Aug 17th. Was out of town for 3 days and when I got back I start seeing diatom. With some manual cleaning and letting run it’s course, it’s about 85% gone as of today).
-Added hector’s goby (Aug 17th. I can’t see him eating dry food. So he just grazes around the rock eating algae).
-First sign of Bacteria bloom. (Aug 21st. Added 10w UV Sterilizer on for 24hr to clean up the bacteria bloom. Only ran 1 day due to temperature raising close to 81.). Bacteria bloom came back few times and I changed out carbon and it cleaned up within a day.
-Took all the sand out when nitrate raised above 25ppm. (Aug 21st. Dropped my nitrate back close down to 5ppm and gradually down to 1ppm using MB7.)
-Added CUC (Aug 27th. 4 snails and 1 hermit crab after seeing few strings of GHA). Currently have GHA in few small spots. Upflow Algae Turf Scrubber is being seeded and coming along. Hopping it will soon able to assist
-Took out 2lbs of rock arche on the back (Sep 1st. Making more open space).
-Added SPS frags to tank. (Sep 1st. After getting to know the tank better and it’s water parameters and consumption I’ve added SPS to the tank). Currently being accumulated to the light. Few Millie’s and tort etc.
Future plan:
-Ordered diffusers for AI Prime’s
-Keep an eye on a GHA. There is just few spots near bottom of the tank).
-Relocate anemone into breeder box
-Start 2pt when alkalinity drops more than 0.4 per day. Currently consuming 0.1-0.2 per day. Probably go with ESV buffer system.
-Keep observing the fishes and corals and feed more.
-Keep SPS’s and fishes alive

2 month 3 week update: 15G JBJ aio reef tank
-Upgrading to 30G this weekend
Salinity: 1.026-1.025 (Milwaukee reflectometer)
pH: 8.0-8.4 (Redsea)
Alkalinity: 8.0 - 8.4 dkH (Hanna & redsea)
Calcium: 420 -380 (redsea)
Magnesium: 1400ppm (redsea & aqua forest)
Nitrate: 1.0-2.0ppm (at highest: 5ppm at lowest: 1.5ppm) (redsea & nyos)
Phosphate: 0.08-0.00 (at highest: .08 at lowest 0.00) (Hanna & redsea)
Maintenance:
-Feed the fishes 2 -3 times a day
-test parameters and stopped dosing mb7 (which is competing against my algae scrubber)
-Dosing Acro power and fuel alternatively twice a week
-Dosing ESV 2pt: about 1ml a day
-Repace filter floss every 2-3 days
-Change out carbon every 15 days
-5Gallon water change biweekly
-Top off ATO
-observe the tank
Changes made:
-8 out of 10 tester SPS survived the first month ( Added sep 1st)
-Took out the BTA’s and took to local shop for credit
-Added 6 more SPS Frags (Sep 29th)
-Added 2 AI Prime diffusers
-Added back 2lb rock which causes diatom to come back again. Mistake in my end. I had to make rearrangement of aqua-scape for the corals
Future plan:
-Keep an eye on a GHA. GHA never took off. So my ugly stage is more of brown dusts. There is thin layer of algae which the snails are taking care of
-Upgrading to 30Gal total system with Sump.
-Ordered IM DC returned pump
-Order RODI Unit
-Order Dosing system
Sorry for bad quality pictures. Hope this information is helpful <><

- LARGE BLUE STAG IN THE PICTURE IS NOT DOING GOOD BUT IT HASNT DIED YET. ( BEEN CUT TO SAVE)

Tank Parameters:
Salinity: 1.027-1.025 (Milwaukee reflectometer) -tested twice a week now
pH: 8.5- 8.3 (Hanna & Redsea) -Stree to test this daily with Hanna hand held controller
Alkalinity: 8.5 to 8.9dkH -tested twice a week now (Hanna & redsea)
Calcium: 375-395 ppm -rarely tested (redsea)
Magnesium: 1400ppm -rarely tested (redsea & aqua forest)
Nitrate: 2.6 - 3.5ppm tested weekly now (redsea & nyos)
Phosphate: 0.00 a 0.03 tested weekly now (Hanna & redsea)
Maintenance:
-Feed the fishes 2 times a day. Down from 3 times a day
-Dose needed supplements (Added BM dosing pump to dose 2pt ESV and amino acid)
-Change out carbon (plan to remove and use once in a while as needed. Was changing every 2 week)
-5Gallon water change weekly-biweekly (Now being changed using Automatic Water change system). Currently changing 5Gallon per 7days.
-Top off ATO 5Gal reservoir
-observe the tank
Changes made:
-Removed algae turf scrubber due to not getting it seed properly. States to have algae in the system. (Pictured).
-Added AWC using Specturapure machine).
-Added 2 AI Prime to Hydra 26. This may contribute to algae growing. Two additional led is running at only 10% intensity. Running Darren coopers dead light 14hr at 70+ increased intensity
-15lbs of initial dry rocks are being covered by brown hair algae. So far, I’m just leaving it at that. If it gets worst, I will do massive water change with rock scrubbing.
-Added 4th hammer coral and free additional SPS frag
Future plan:
- I think I’m done tweaking around with the tank and I do believe my tank is stable now. Algae is not an issue as it’s barely holding on. Will combat with less feeding.
-No more future plan other than keeping corals and fishes alive and happy <><
I’ve added some picture of the tank. There is picture with all the lights on this morning for the reference.

6 month old SPS tank update:
1 photo is with 100% light on which shows you the algae on the rocks that were introduced early on. Tank is stable as for the parameters but still in needing to dose nitrate in liquid form (once or twice a week) to keep it from bottoming out. 2pt dosing of daily 10ml each is keeping my tank stable at 8.4 alk and 410 calcium constant. Using Fritz RPM salt. I did add back the turf scrubber to give it a try one more time.

In the process of moving, next week x.x

and thinking,

new project idea came up!
What if we shrine the light from all directions?
Well 3 of 6 side at least.
I can definitely see that the corals light up better and will definitely help with better growth. Ramping up the light slowly,

8 month tank update:

Tank moving day. Feb 9th Thursday

Took 2 hour to break down the tank and took 4 hour to set it back up. I’ve used about 10Gallon of Old water and 20 gallon of new salt water. (I made the salt water this morning in a 20G brute tote). End up taking out about 70% of sand due to moving.
Some corals did break off (Transferred in 5 gallon buckets) so, I tried to put back as best as I can.

I tried to make the same aqua scape like before with somewhat success. Also, I was able to completely “un-touched” the back wall with live rocks. GSP might migrate to the rock later which I don’t want to happen. Still need to set up dosing pump and two LED’s. Automatic water changing is out of equation. Everything survived but am worried about mandarin goby. It will take some time for the pod to repopulate. I cleaned the sump as well.

Last Front tank shot before the move. And set-up <><

Getting last look before moving.

My dream tank is 180Gal. (6’x2’x2’).

BUT I felt in love with NANO. The “reward” ratio to the effort, money and time put into the tank. I don’t think I will ever go big again.
Granted it’s small, it has much more rewarding compare to larger system. Just me. I enjoy Nano tank way more than larger system. Haha <><

After 24 hrs everything settled in.

24 hrs later.jpg

24 2.jpg

My new light setup: I do believe this will help with growth and thickess of corals as it grows. These fixtures were all lit from the top. So I have 1x26hd and 2x16hd's lit. I can already see the all the sides has colored up nicely. Initially set up starting Feb 26th.

9 month update:

-Tank: 24 Gal aqua top reef tank + 7Gal sump
-Light: AI Hydra 26HD and 2 AI Prime 16HD
-Flow: 3 AI Nero 3 on random,
-Filtration: Roller Mat 500, Santa Monica UFS, Miracle Mud, Sphere Media, activated carbon some times, UV rarely
-Misc: Neptune Apex (Old 2nd edition), Bubble Magus BM-01 doser, IM Hydrofill , Tunze DC9001, Hygger titanium heater on controller sensor, Hygger 915 dc return pump

Details:
-Tank was started on July 9th 2022 (Upgrade from 15AIO on September 30th 2022). (Moved to new home on March 9th 2023)
-Started with Dry Rock Dry Sand raw shrimp
-Zero lost other than 2 initial test frags of 10 (2 millepora) (Added September 1st 2022)
-Added 9 more SPS frags (you can see them with bright superglue all over the base). I am horrible at using glues. (Last Friday)
-Removed some of frags to friends tank (WB130G) for him to start on SPS journey
-Adding 2.5lb of miracle mud in the sump for added nutrients
-Plan to add the rest of the sand that was taken out when tank was relocated month ago.
-Started to add Kalk in addition to 2pt via doser (Started today 1/2tsp per Gal mixture)
-Lowered 2pt dosing due to corals taken out
-Vodka carbon dosing. Started 3 weeks ago
-4 Fishes ( two clown, cherub angelfish, mandarin goby) and few small snails and 1 crab
-I seen bubble algaes but very few

Tank Parameters:
Salinity: 1.027-1.025 (Milwaukee reflectometer) -tested twice a week now
pH: 8.5- 8.3 (Hanna & Redsea) -Tested randomly twice a week
Alkalinity: 8.5 to 8.9dkH -tested twice a week now (Hanna & redsea) - currently at 8.6
Calcium: 375-395 ppm -rarely tested (redsea)
Currently not sure. Dose same with alk amount as 2pt
Magnesium: 1400ppm -rarely tested (redsea & aqua forest). Currently not sure. Didn’t test
Nitrate: 6.5ppm-0.0ppm. tested weekly now (Hanna & redsea) Last month was 10-6. This month it kept dropping. Noticed hammers looking shrunk. It dropped to 0.0ppm (4days no testing), added Neo-Nitro to bring back to 3.0 then to 6.0. This means my tank filter system is taking everything and need extra feedings. I feed 3 times a day for fishes. It’s mixture of rod’s food with dry pellets, Nori, vitamins and coral foods etc all premade for a week worth.
Phosphate: 0.20- 0.01 Last month was 0.4-.02ish tested weekly now (Hanna & redsea) currently 0.01 but my phosphate goes up and down 0.2 to 0.01

Maintenance:
-Feed the fishes 3 times a day.
-Dose needed supplements (Added BM dosing pump to dose 2pt ESV and amino acid manually, vodka manually) Dosage is 5ml each 2pt and 2-3ml amino daily
-Water change 5Gal per Week Fritz rpm
-UTS Scrubber is now full on effect. LED on for 12 hrs only and air bubble lowered due to too much extraction of nitrate s phosphate. Was at 24hr LED for about two week but I noticed my nutrient dropping faster than before. So lowered air bubbles and led on time

-Currently battling green cyano bacteria. It comes on day time and goes away at night.
-Added tons of CUC and taken out the killer red hermit and put em in the sump with sand shifting Star.
-Vodka dosing seems to be throwing my chemistry off. But it’s only assumption. Keeping an eye on the cyano
-Replaced broken Nero 3 pump on the back

11 month update:
-Stopped vodka dosing. Which eliminated the green cyano bacteria. Carbon dosing will do that. One strain of dominant bacteria will over populate. Mine never seized until I stoped dosing.
-That’s about it. Same everything.
-Still needing to dose nitrate time to time.
-Moved hammers around to make better flow between them.
-Got few encrusting corals added.
