I use barley straw in my 90g koi pond for algae control . Seems to work well, as I failed to put any in this year and it's the first time in 10 years that I had algae. So, I wonder if it could be used or work the same in a reef? I read that a by product when it breaks down is H2O2.

I believe Algone is barley straw based, though they never come out and say it.

We used barley straw to control algae in some of the golf course ponds in Hawaii, but never tried it in an aquarium. Interested in hearing results!

They sell a ball of this in the Koi and pond section of the lfs. I've dosed H202 in my tank before so what would be the difference of adding a ball of this to the sump? Hmmm, maybe a small ball of this in a media bag and place it in the sump. Might give it a try.
