Of course I already spent my tank allowance for the month, but I couldn't pass this up!

Where would you place in the tank? Up high or closer to the sand?

Beautiful clams. Not sure how well one would do in my tank since it’s less then 3 months old.

There is no specific established time that a tank is ready. Generally it's when your water parameters are correct and stable and you have a good handle on maintenance. I try to aim for parameters similar to natural saltwater. Clams need a lot of light and they also utilize nitrate and phosphate so they tend to do better in tanks that are not so pristine. But, that's not to say poorly maintained. Clams are a beautiful addition to a reef tank, but can be a challenge too.

I have what I think would be perfect spot atop the tank rock work but trying to decide if it’s better to spend some more money now on cuc to get the sand and sump all cleaned up. The sump has a lot of detritus and cyano and other yucky stuff.

If you're having those issues I'd suggest waiting until you get that resolved.
