Found this guy outside of my aquarium but found a few more around the skimmer and filter sock.

awesome thank you. It's what I thought it was but wanted to be sure. had a infestation over a year ago and killed all my fish so im a little jumpy lol
If it killed your fish then what you had prior was a carnivore isopod that I believe attacks fish gills. Cirolanidae isopods. You can search the forums for more posts about those.

Back to your original question though, this is a beneficial amphipod.

I had a infestation of parasites, so anytime I find anything not normal I start researching
 

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
