I think chrysophytes, but I got my reef tank phd from Mr. Google himself…
Tank is 6 months old, started with gulf rock from KP. I recently just beat Dino’s (LCA) in my larger display, so when I looked at these under the mic, there was like 1% the life when compared to when I looked at my other tank under a microscope. But, that tank is over 4 years old, so likely that is the reason.
I was gone 5 days, my wife was feeding the tank rinsed frozen rods at night and my auto feeder did the rest, as it normally does.
Before I left I started to get a slight build up of slime on random things. Then, my Reefmat when nuts, and started using 100-300 inches a day. This started about 2 days before I left, but I had to travel for work, so I put a new roll on and hoped for the best. After 3 days, it exhausted the roll. I got home last night and there was a layer of slime on everything, I mean everything. I took a turkey baster and blew the rocks off, after I cleaned the glass and the water could barely been seen through. I put another roll on, then I stopped and got a sock, and let it run through a sock for a couple hours. It was like snot in there. A few hours later I hooked up the roller and went to sleep. I woke up and it hasn’t come back like it was, my roller has also gone back to normal consumption but I still see a slimy fuzz on all the rocks. Sadly, my large emerald crab that has been with us for about 4-5 months died, several nasarius (sp?) and nearly my entire amphipod population have all died. But all these collonistas are still alive as is my cleaner shrimp, bumble bees and hermits.
I’ve included some pics, some pics of the slime under my microscope and a long video. If you go to the last 7-8 minutes I find some life in 3 different areas and have decent videos of it. I don’t think james Cameron should worry about his job… sorry in advance.
I fear with the margin of error I have bottomed out, and am not sure how long I perhaps have been here. NO3 - 2.8 PO4 - .01 , I’m working to get these up to a more acceptable level now.
Also, I only saw one or two very small areas that had any bubbles…
