You can, but in my opinion it will not be the best option for a reef tank... a lot of organics float to the top of the water column and need to be skimmed of, and ultimately removed via some sort of filtration.

What type of reef tank are you shooting for?

Ok, well you can try it, personally I would go a different route... maybe someone else might have a better answer on this one.
