Have you thought about having a closed loop? You don't have to drill for one but it would be good to have a sand bed to hide the pipes on the bottom.

If it's your return then it's an open loop. A close loop doesn't suffer from head loss just friction loss. And you can put outlets anywhere without fear of it siphoning out of the tank if the power goes out.
Here is a good example:

does that mean the overflow box could be removed?

No, the closed loop is separate.

Is the overflow in the middle of the rock stack?

If it is, I would seriously consider putting everything in a tub, draining it, removing the overflow and blocking the hole(s) and putting a fijicube overflow on the back wall of the tank.

You could then redo the rock stack to allow for much better flow.

Just my opinion.

Look into the tunze pumps and keep your gyres. Put them on the overflow box since their magnets can be submerged (I’m not sure if the others you have can or can’t. But I know EcoTech cannot). With tunze pumps on the box you will be able to direct he flow where you need it.
