Is it hard to work a dslr? I kind of understand the concept behind certain settings but never used anything other than a point and shoot.

No it doesn't have the live viewfinder during shots, the screen only displays the shot after its taken. I have a D5100 and it does have the live screen which I wanted forever, but now I don't even use lol. DSLR cameras are not hard to use. It's similar to your point and shoot if you run it in auto. I will include a "DSLR For Dummies" book as it can be helpful. The instructions that are with the camera also explain various features. IMO just playing with camera is the best way to learn what does what. But it is user friendly and you can get good shots without too much effort.
