My sand sifting goby makes the sand snow all over my tank. If you can put it on an angled rock so current can sweep sand and detritus off of it and it will catch and eat the food items that land on top. Flat surfaces tend to collect stuff and the coral will have to work to keep clean.

I have had mine on the sandbed; it's doing fine and is growing.

Maybe best of both worlds. Put some rubble rocks on the bottom to keep it off the sand and make fragging easy when it gets too big.

I keep my chalice on a rock on the sandbed with no problems. I even have a diamond watchman goby.
