Hello ! New on here, I have a leak in the pvc where my return pump is, the pvc cement didn’t cure properly but I’ve already filled the tank with water, if I drained the over flow on my Red Sea 170 would the tank water from the main tank enter it or would I be able to
Do the repair without anymore water spilling threw ?

Welcome to R2R!!! If I understand your question correctly, when you drain the water in the main tank to a point below the overflow then you should be able to work on your sump (including your return pump). Pictures will help us to be more specific and definitive with our responses.

So this is we’re the leak is happening , I just want to make sure if I drain the water in the back over flow that I’ll be able to do the fix without all the water from the tank rushing down too when I take the pipe off

Just turn off the pump, cut it the bad section, glue in a new section with coupler fittings, and resume operation. If you use that purple pvc glue you only really need to let it sit for about 15 - 20 mins before you put it back to use. If your tank isn’t stocked yet and just cycling you can leave the return off for a day if you want and let it fully cure. Just keep the power head/wave maker in the display on the keep the water moving.

Yea, like said above, you don’t have to drain anything just unplug the pump and cut out the coupling. While you have it apart I would suggest replacing the coupling with a union so you can easily do pump maintenance down the road.

Once the overflow is drained, then nothing should come out of the tank.

Just drain the display down to just below the weir teeth so a little splashing from wavemakers doesn't go down the overflow messing up the gluing.
