Sorry, I should have said I was running off to look for something. I'm trying to find a picture of one of the snails I had.... I believe the eggs look like those. Unfortunately, they were eggs from a Epitonium.

I only have a few tectus snails. I noticed also that some heads are shrinking and are almost gone

I'm pretty sure those are Epitonium eggs.... they wouldn't be a critter you buy. They are a nasty zoa sucking predator whose eggs hitchhiked in (if it's a newish colony) and/or you have the snail in there out of view. If your zoas are shrinking... you have the adult snail too.

If I were you, I'd take that colony are and get to work on removing the eggs. They are probably super sticky, so it's not an easy job.

I'm continuing to look for my files with my snail in them. I have them somewhere.

So, this is what the snail should look like. Keep an eyeball out for it. Those are indeed the eggs of it. Mine was a big ole brute. They were worse than the sundial/box snail zoa preds as they ate (sucked) through the zoas pretty fast. I had a sundial snail tank and would feed them little zoa frags.... this guy hitchhiked in and I couldn't keep in fed zoas he ate so many so fast and had to get rid of him. The sundial snail did not eat through them half as fast.

I didn't realize they were eggs at first and didn't catch a picture of them on the coral. This was after I pulled them, I could stick them on anything and there they would stay.

Ugh. Sorry. I removed the snail and picked off all the eggs. The eggs are super sticky and you need to use tweezers.

Anyone else deal with predatory snails?

No, they eat other things, but I believe each species has a different favorite. Like Epitonium billeeanum eats Tubeastra. Epitonium hartogi eats bubble corals.... But where yours eats zoas, it's probably all it eats. I have some readings on them and I'll get back to you and let you know with more certainty.

So......

Well, this one study was just "lovely" They were looking at growth rates of a few species when fed their natural prey verses when fed an unnatural prey under lab conditions. Even though they were smaller, they took the substitute food, so that means they don't mind straying off course. I bet they would eat their preferred food and then when they ran out, switch to "whatever". Guess what their "lab food" was.... aippies. How apropos.

Oh yes, it's a positive ID on the one from yesterday. The other with the half shell is probably just a stomatella.
