It might promote branching at the cut, but almost certainly cutting stunts the growth.

Do you think It matters If Its a soft vs hard coral?

Let's use Kenya Tree for example. It will take a week or so for it to attach itself. During that time it is using it's energy to heal. Would be the same with any coral. Why are you asking?

There are plenty of SPS keepers that will cut a coral to promote growth. Sometimes an acropora will "stall out" and stop growing so fragging it can promote healing and growth in that area. I've also heard of SPS keepers fragging corals to make them grow in certain directions.
