I have a pretty severe majano infestation. It's never really bothered me as I've always been more of a fish guy. I recently started collecting some finer LPS corals, acros and other SPS which are currently in another tank of mine. One day I hope to move these corals to my DT and I want to "clean" it up first.

So what method(s) do you use, and are there any side effects? Thanks in advance!

I had a really bad infestation in my 215 reef. Yes, Kalk does work or the products like Aiptasia X. Depending on the price though this can get pretty costly if you have a big system like mine. If you can get away with it, just turn the lights off or take the affected rocks out of the system and put them in a mostly closed rubbermaid container with your normal tank water in it. The dark will cause the aiptasia and majanos to die. Rinse the rocks really well before putting them back in the system as you may have some other die off and "curing." If you do this with just a few rocks at a time, it will work.

I'd remove the rocks and nuke them. Bleach, followed by muriatic acid. Really make sure you soak them and use enough acid. I seriously think I had a couple majanos survive two weeks in the sun, bleach bath, then muriatic acid bath. This seems utterly impossible but I cannot figure out where else they would have come from. Crazy.

That said, if you do find some stragglers, use a majano wand. Easier to get into tight spaces and kills them dead. It's very satisfying to watch them fizzle away into tiny particles.

I'd really like to do so without nuking my tank. I will go the filefish route and then if necessary cleanup with a wand. My tank is established and when I bought all of my LR it came from a local hobbyist and I was definitely green behind the ears and didn't know the majanos we're going to be such a problem. Well now that I am working on SPS I want to get my tank all cleaned up prior to adding any SPS corals.

Have you thought about a copperband butterfly? I know I added mine and it destroyed the aiptasia population. I would assume it would eat majanoes as well. If you were to try it I would order the Australian variety as they are known to fair better in captivity. I got mine from the divers den and it now eats frozen food as well.

F-aptasia. www.franks-tanks.com.
I saw a post on here. He was selling it claiming it worked. It looked just like aptasia x to me so I bypassed it. A few weeks later I saw the post again. Everyone was raving about it. I decided to give it a try. Well, dang this guy hit on something. Works great!!! I put it on aptasia and majanos. Two weeks later nothing has come back. Try it!

Definitely get some berghia nudis for a heavy infestation. You can buy just a few and they will establish themselves in your tank, breed, multiple, and eventually completely wipe out the entire population of aptasias. Fish are hit or miss. Sometimes a copperband or filefish will not show any interest in them. The Berghia Nudis are very reliable though.

I have one in QT now that eats like a boss! It's @4FordFamily's fish. I might give it the ol, whoops and drop it in my tank by accident!

If it does eat majanos (and it won't) I will lend it to you. I've never even had one eat aiptasia. I know they do, but I've not heard of them eating majanos, or at least not many of them. We will find out though! :D

AiptasiaX worked for mine. I had about 10 of them at the peak, which I know isn’t a lot. I had to hit a couple of them 2 times but finally got rid of all of them. Now if only there was an easy way to get rid of vermetid snails...
I use aiptasia x on vermetids, use the applicator that came in the box and fill their tube up, never had one survive that.

Syringe with lemon juice or Kalk made into a thin paste very effective and is Majano wand to sting /melt them.

Years ago I had a total, swamped infestation of Majano’s in my 6x2x2 foot tank, it got to the point of wanting to pack up the hobby but I decided to get on track and sort it, after a lot of searching I purchased a Raccoon Butterfly fish, it took a lot of weeks but eventually they were all gone, stunning fish it was my hero, I then purchased a Majano wand so ended up doing a Harry Potter on the odd on or two.

I thought bicolor angels (Centropyge bicolor) had a reputation for eating majanos? (A less risky choice in a reef tank than say, a raccoon butterflyfish?)

I am partial to Majano Wands. But then again, I invented the thing.
You may be able to borrow one or get a used one from E Bay.

Thanks! :0)

As I said in a previous post, it's extremely pleasing to use the wand and disintegrate those guys.

@HotRocks, it'll be worth zapping a few of them even if it won't really matter in the grand scheme. You'll enjoy it and feel like you're making progress. Yes, seriously. You have to try it. :0)

I had a major infestation and tried everything. They would slowly start to receid and several more would pop up in its place. I finally got fed up and bleached all of my rock outside of my tank. I also ended up acid washing it, but don’t think that’s vital, unless youre having algae or organic breakdown problems.

While majano wand can be effective with a total approach, Racoon butterfly will eat them and unlike Kalkwasser powder effectiveness, they die from Pickling lime which is hydroxide.
