Mielo’s 300g Octagon tank

Hi all

I am new to this forum. It has been over 10 years since I last shut down my 10 footer. Its been hell suffering the withdrawal symptoms, but I am finally back. I purchased a second hand ex display fully equipped Octagon tank from an LFS.

A relative shut down his 4ftr after 8yrs of running it and I basically took his whole setup from him. I took his sump as is with the DSB and connected it to my tank.

I also took all his liverock, livesand and livestock as well.

System Objectives: A beautiful, FOWLR or healthy reef system. (Not sure yet)

Strike up Date: 16/05/2020

Display Tank: 1100 x 1100 x 900 15mm glass Weir situated in middle of the tank with 3 x 25mm, 2 x 32mm holes

Sump: 910 x 350 x 510 with 3 compartments
1st one - Skimmer
2nd - two return pumps
3rd - 18cm DSB with liverock rubble on top

Display Lighting: (Work in Progress)

Stand: Steel stand

Hood: TBC

System Water: Natural salt water

Display Water circulation: Flow of the return pumps

Return Pumps Laguna 9000 & Fluvall SP4

Skimmer: octopus 2000 (to be upgraded soon)

Heaters: 3 x 300w Jager

Evaporation Top Up: DIY auto topup

Current Livestock: Majestic Angel, Blue Tang, Yellow Tang, Ocellaris Clownfish, Mandarin, 3x Blue/Green Chromis, 3x Hermit Crabs

This the front view of the tank. Still undecided on whether I should just cover the stand with black acrylic fixed to the metal stand with velcro for easy access. Or build a wooden frame with doors etc.

Hi all

Just wondering if anyone could give some tips on aquascaping this tank. Some ideas on what styles would suit this tank.

Also I have the challenge of the tank being 900mm deep, it would of probably been simpler if I did the aquascaping before filling it up.

Any tips on how to move the rocks right at the bottom which I cannot reach myself? I do have aquarium tongs, but sometimes it just too weak to move heavy rocks.

Hi all

I bought myself a Dalua GW 12DC+ skimmer and I am pretty impressed with it thus far. Installed in yesterday and this (see pic) is the amount of skimmate extracted in 24hrs.
