Hi Everyone,

I am looking to start mixing my own salt I want some suggestions on the best salt? and if I can buy on amazon! I am looking to buy like a bag that can do 50 gallons. Maybe 200 lbs if I can get a good deal. I have a duncan coral and am planning on adding some clownfish tomorrow and maybe another fish, but just want some suggestions on good salt at a reasonable price!

For a good salt Instant Ocean is very well priced. It goes on sale quite often @ Live Aquaria and Amazon.

+1 on instant ocean. I've been using for years. I just bought a couple 200g boxes for $42 on chewy with free shipping. Most I've ever paid. Occasionally they go on sale for $30/box. That's when I load up and order the max allowed.

Do you have a link to the instant ocean that you use? There is many different varieties. Just want to make sure I get the best one

Well .....
I use Red Sea salt.
When I first set up my tank I bought 3 buckets of Instant Ocean and 1 bucket of Red Sea blue bucket (regular) 600 gallons is a lot of salt mix. Instant Ocean is a good salt and many really nice tanks are using it. I dont like the way it mixes. For me, I have to mix IO longer than Red Sea and still I get a residue left over in my barrel. Red Sea (RS) leaves a residue but it takes a year to get the same as 1 month of IO.
I like my alk around 9. I mix RS Blue Bucket and the RS Coral Pro 50/50. I do a 10% water change every week. This and a calcium reactor keeps my tank stable.
Its more a personal choice. I could use IO and Reef Crystals and have the same success. Prob save a ton of many too. But Im old and set in my ways.

While salt is salt, I 100% agree with lapin.
Too much crude in my bin, Too much inconsistency with IO. Too many complaints of variable levels.
I hate cleaning buckets and consistency is everything in this game.
for me, RS is well worth the few extra bucks.
