Hey gang. I seem to have a rather quick growing algae. Tank is a little over 4 months old. RS 300 XL. Weekly 10% water change with RODI with fritz RPM salt. Tang, 2 clowns, 6 line, goby pistol pair and 5 LPS frags. Help with ID greatly appreciated.

Your PO4 is too low, based on the research I've read I'd suggest between .03 mg/l and .5 mg/l. I'd get some urchins or other algae eaters besides your fish to clean the aquascaping. You may find this technique with steel straws useful also. For the most part it looks like the typical "uglies" seen during the maturing process in a reef system that can take form a few months to a year. If you didn't use any maricultured or wild live rock I'd sugtgest getting some as it adds sponges and microbial stuff that can't be stuck in a bottle. See Aquabiomics article here

I realize this is a huge data bomb and a lot to take in at once but you may find thses linkss informative. Take you time watching and reading them and in a few months as you get a little more experience with your system review them.

"Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas" This video compliments Rohwer's book of the same title (Paper back is ~$20, Kindle is ~$10), both deal with the conflicting roles of the different types of DOC in reef ecosystems. While there is overlap bewteen his book and the video both have information not covered by the other and together give a broader view of the complex relationships found in reef ecosystems

Thanks Tim. I will give the videos a look. Do I just have to wait out the ugly phases? Is there something I should do to increase PO4?

Great videos Tim. Never have had PO4 higher than 0 in this tank.

I guess I also forgot to mention the cleanup crew. I have a conch some Astraea snails and a cleaner shrimp. Maybe that is not enough.
