How long is a fish optic nerve?
This looks much better than yesterday.
Looks to be getting better

As these fish are easily spooked, may be from a mechanical injury and treatable in a separate tank using Maracyn which is ethromyacin with added aeratio. Not maracyn oxy

Not sure of the question. The optic nerve runs from the back of the eye to the brain, which is located roughly midway between the eyes.

This is almost assuredly caused by mechanical damage. If the fish is eating well and other eye remains clear, and infection doesn't set it, it will heal on its own in a month or so. If it become red and inflamed, you might need to treat with erythromycin. Since you report it is improving, I wouldn't treat it.

Unfortunately in Australia most of the remedies are via doctors prescription only. We can not get antibiotics for aquarium fish.
I did does melafix twice

It's looking better again today

I was curious as to if the eye was still functional after being distended so far.

As far as the eye regaining function - looking at your pictures. I think it will. Loss of function is usually seen when the eye itself is lost, or if there is some residual opacity to the lens.

I really doubt if the Melafix had any benefit here, it is most likely just receding on its own. Still, good news though!
