Hello,

Currently, I have a HOB (maybe?) box filter that came with my 20g aquarium. I have 20lbs of dry rock and 30 pounds of live sand.

I am in the market for a decent skimmer, something that is not overly priced but is going to do its job I plan to upgrade my size in July/August so I don't want to make a huge purchase just to need to buy a new one. I currently do not have a pump so I would need a HOB skimmer.

I am looking for a new filter upgrade. I understand that the standard ones that come with the aquarium aren't that great. Suggestions? I've also been doing some filter research, but I'm not sure I'm looking in the right place, so links would be very helpful if you could.

Also, researching powerheads - if you have any suggestions, please let me know!

Check out aquaclear filters there really good
It suggested to have 3 types of filtration
mechanical filtration: which is like filter floss and sponges
Chemical filtration: carbon, chemipure, GFO
Biological filtration is what your live rock does for you.

Do you have a budget you would like to spend on a good HOB skimmer ?

Check out korila Wavemakers, they are cheap and really reliable

I honestly do not have a budget. Obviously I do not want to spend like $300+ but I do want the best for my fish.

As far as skimmers go, I just purchased an IceCap Nano skimmer. I've had it a week now and it's just breaking in and pulling some really dark skimmate. You could mount it right inside your tank.

Skimmers aren’t necessary in a nano, so you could even skip one but reef octopus in a good brand and 2 on each side is a good.
