I think three xr15 will be plenty in a three foot long tank. Maybe even two. But it depends on what par you want.

I agree.
Normally I go with XR30's because people seem to want to go the least expensive way and use cheaper XR15's.
But in this case the XR15 model seems more appropriate, given the size of the tank
I even think you could get away with 2 fixtures to start. I'm assuming smaller frags in a new tank.
Once things start growing and creating shade for lower pieces, then maybe a third fixture or some other supplemental led bar or T5 tubes.

Two XR15s should be MORE than enough for a 40 Breeder. Might want to find some Gen 5s or look into the new lenses for the Gen 6 to keep more of the light in the tank, though.

I HATE shadows myself, but even I don't feel under-gunned with three Primes on that size tank. Like I said, two XR15s should do it easily.
