Sponge-like with hole attached to base of Elegance

I found this soft sponge-like thing attached to the base of an elegance. I only saw it when I changed flow and it lifted the part of the elegance up. There seemed to be two holes or entrance/exists in it, one pictured. I did remove it incase it was harmful. Thoughts on what it is?
