Yes bioballs are not needed, I took them out and stripped the black paint from the center chamber and turned it into a fuge. I also got rid of stock lights and replaced them with LEDs. I also run gfo in the first rear chamber, and occasionally run carbon in the third.

Really? I have never heard that before. Magnesium coats ca and keeps it from precipitating out as ca carb allowing higher levels of calcium and carb. For the most part it can be maintained with regular water changes with a salt that has decent levels of Mg

Yes MG is important, it is apart of the triangle with alk and ca. Most important when dealing with stonies. It does not deplete fast, I only need to dose it once a week at most.
