that light dusting should only take a few days to die off.For how long? And what kind of algae do you think it is?
looks like green cyano..
to get rid of it:
1. siphon out all visible cyano at least once a day (suck it out with a turkey baster)
2. reduce nutrients (water change, chemical media, etc., part "1." also helps with this to some extent as you export the cyano)
3. increase flow, this will keep it from growing on the sand bed (but doesn't solve the underlying problem)
imo, using lighting to kill algae doesn't make sense, nutrients are the problem not light...
