That is a female A. neoguineaicus. Males have less black on the back and develop red on the caudal.

Cool thanks! I'll look out for a male then!

I personally have never seen a male for sale in the trade, I have only seen them after a female has been in captivity and transitioned to a male. Besides, wrasses dont form bonded pairs like clowns or other fish, so keeping prs of a larger wrasse can be tricky.

Eatbreakfast, what's the difference between H. marginatus and H. annularis? Is annularis old taxonomy? Suppliers refer to both as "Dusky Wrasse". Another reason common names stink.

Correct, they were just described as different species based on juvenile/ female coloration vs male coloration. Also different descriptions from different locations. H. lamarii is also a synonymous identification.

Saw this handsome fellow at the store today without any identification. What do you think this is?

I picked up a "mystery" wrasse from an African shipment at a lfs. I'll try to get a better picture tomorrow when the light is on.

Pseudocheilinus evanidus, the pinstriped wrasse. Care and temperament is similar to the rest of the Genus.

This guy was posted on RVS Fishworld's facebook page. What does everyone think it is? I have my ID suspicions, but have heard other authorities on the subject disagree.

Lemon said cf. tonozukai, I agreed, Tanaka said it wasn't tonozukai and may be new.

It might simply be rubripinnis, now that I see it on a real screen (and not on a mobile browser).

Your thoughts TJ?

I'm pretty set on rubripinnis after looking at some other photos on the RVS page.
