thanks, i was just sort of thinking to myself whats the purpose of the little bio media rocks if i already have lots of rocks and sand as hardscape. also figured maybe the sponge would hold even more beneficial bacteria?Depends on your true goal for the HOB but I vote sponge and/or filter material just for mechanical filtration since your rock likely already has sufficient bacteria.
I run Tidal 110 HOB on 40 gallon tank (no sump) and use sponge, pond filter, and Matrix (bio rubble) but only use the Matrix since it came with the filter. *previously I ran two smaller HOBs with no bio-media and never had any issue with high residual nutrients
...but every situation is different
Probably could,,, but I blast mine out with hot tap water to clean so likely not in my case,,, doh!... also figured maybe the sponge would hold even more beneficial bacteria?
