I originally purchased 2 Bangaii cardinals about a year ago. One didn’t make it through QT. The other is still around. Is it a bad idea to try to add a second at this stage?

I’ll be shutting down that tank next week and moving that Bangaii with a few other fish to a new tank. Is that the best time to add a second? Or should I just avoid it?

This species does not change sex to pair off like a lot of others.

You have to be very careful to make sure the next one you put in is the opposite sex. Sexing this species is not impossible, but is very difficult. The males tend to have larger jaws and 2 tiny black rice shape structures near the cloaca or vent. The females only have 1 tiny rice shape black structure.

If you do some research, you can actually find pictures of these organs and exactly what they look like. I'll tell you from experience though when they are swimming around it's hard to spot.

If you pair 2 males or 2 females though they WILL kill each other.
