Best type of wood for topper?

Looking to top this fish tank stand and put a piece of plywood for the sump under. Im going to sand it very smooth and paint as well as add trim.

What type would be best from a big box store like home depot?

i looked at that last and its not sanded to my level of smooth so i guess it would save me some steps in grit

Be careful sanding the veneers are very thin

I used 3/4" birch. Looks good and resists water damage very well

Would you consider a workbench top?

Home Depot/etc sell butcher block workbench tops, sanded smooth and finished with poly/varnish, at a much more reasonable rate than you’ll get for a butcher block “countertop”
