It begins!

This thread will be my attempt to document (the good, bad, ugly) adventures and learnings of a DIY AIO 33.5g FOWLR (plus inverts!) tank.

August 2023, The Build Plan: Starting with an empty 33.5g Waterbox tank. Adding a DIY AIO sump in the back (semi-inspired by the IM Fusion 40): dual-overflow, 4 chambers, plus the return chamber. DIY stand (more budget for fish things, heh). 35 lbs live rock, and a DEEP SAND BED (all caps to encourage the forever on-going debate around them ;)).

Current Status
  • Tank: 33.5 gallon Waterbox
  • Sump: DIY AIO rear sump, with dual overflow, 4 chambers, plus return chamber (dual return lines)
    • chamber 1A: filter sock, 200W Helio heater
    • chamber 2A: Tunze 9004 DC skimmer
    • chamber 1B: 3-part media caddy (currently running floss only while cycling)
    • chamber 2B: fuge (currently empty, probably future chaeto space)
    • return: MightyJet 326 GPH
  • Powerhead: Tunze Turbelle 6040
  • Occupants: 35 lbs GulfLiveRock (presently day 1 curing in display tank)
Next steps
  • cycling in progress! I'm keeping an eye on the levels, ready for a water change if necessary.
  • cable management
  • hitchhiker identification

Here's a pic of the back of the sump, while I was doing a dry fit of all the parts and equipment before gluing it all up.
