diy sump, tank stand

i will be building a stand for a 40 breeder tank. i want to have to sump outside also as a show piece. has anyone done this? and any issues with flow? how far below the display tank waterline do i need to be?

Is your overflow going through the bottom, side, or over the top? Gravity fed. so completely below the DT to get enough velocity/volume will probably be your only option.

No one has put their sump beside their display tank? Looks like i will be experimenting in the garage. I just have 2 tanks right now i need to build the stands and get a return pump and either a drilled overflow or a hob overflow. Will update later maybe start a build thread.
