I have a filter roller on my system and it does a good job. But i was wondering if i took out the filter roller and set up a refugium intead would that provide more benifit for the tank? I can have either or as the sump is only big enough for one of them.

if you can only choose one, filter roller is the way to go. refugiums are awesome, but not space-efficient. If you feel like your nutrient export is still lacking, you could add an algae turf scrubber, they have quite small footprints. I use an icecap unit myself: https://amzn.to/493q4Rf

I have a Reefmat 1200 that takes up a lot of space. I am trying to figure out a way to add a HOB refugium to my sump. If I can use the discharge from my UV sterilizer to move water through the refugium that would be a bonus.

what’s your budget? you could look into the smarter reefs auto cleaning skimmer. i believe he’s working on a turf scrubber attachment for it so you could potentially have all of the above
