How do I run dual 600 watt heaters on an Apex EB832?

I have an Inkbird controller with dual 600 watt BRS titanium heaters. When I plugged the Inkbird in to one of the outlets on the EB832 I get a high load warning and have had to move the plug to a seperate non-contolled outlet. I would very much like to run this through the Apex for a redundancy.

System is 230 gallons.

For those using this type of setup, how are you doing it?

Is dual 600 watt heaters overkill? Is there a better set up?

I have this same setup. I run a Helios Controller. I didn’t waste space on the EB832 since the Helios is a controller as well. Are your heaters in the Sump?

I use a KASA power strip. It will track power use and can be controlled with an app. Not really using much heat though with the warm weather.

I run 6x400w halides, about 2000w of LED and 4x800w heaters. Each one of those would max out an EB8. I ended up making secondary high amp relays for that stuff that pull power off a dedicated circuit.

Beyond overkill. I run 2*300w heaters on my 250 and one rarely turns on. Tank is in 68° basement and kept between 76-77°

I recently had this happen to me as I upgraded heaters. What I did was plug the heaters into my InkBird then plugged the InkBird into a smart plug into a regular outlet. This way I still have my apex monitoring constantly and if there is any temp issues my apex will let me know and I can shut off the smart outlet from my phone

the EB4 and EB
I have an EB8 hooked up as well. How does this change the overcurrent warning? Does the older EB8 and EB4 not have this warning?

Yes the older EB4 & EB8 do not have per outlet amp reading so no warning. The label on the left of the unit clearly states how many AMPs each outlet can handle. EB4 has 3 outlets rated at 8A each and one rated at 12Amp. It should be disclosed that you cannot load the whole strip with more than 15Amps in total.

To calculate amps (roughly) you can divide Watts per 120 (volt) to get Amps. So 600W heater will be 600/120=5Amps.

You also dont want to load it to the max per outlet / per strip.

EB4, EB8 and EB832 are all rated to 15 amps max. So at 120v that would be 1800 watts max.

Just add up the watts and see if youre going over.

If you have 2 (600W) heaters plugged into an inkbird and then you want to plug that into an APEX only outlet #3 on an EB4 would be feasible for that purpose.

I have something similar with my LED's and T5's. They are powered from a smart strip that's plugged into the EB832 so if the tank gets too hot, maintenance, etc...

Older EB8 or EB4 would be my option as well. Or you can use outlet 4/8 on the EB832.

The older EB8/4 dosent have the 'overcurrent' warning, they are just "on" or "off" switching outlets.

Seems he is plugging the inkbird with 2 heaters into the apex so at 10A in total the EB832 is no go.

Thank you all. This is why I ask here.

Currently running (4) MP40, (3) XR30 and a DC return pump through the EB8 and the rest of the equipment other than the heaters on the 832.

I will research the watts of each component and see where I am at. Might then move the return pump over and the Inkbird to outlet 8 in the older EB8.

This is what I was trying to do.

Sounds like the dual 600 watt heaters are oversized for my need. May swap those out for smaller heaters.

2 x 300W should be sufficient and then outlet #4 & #8 on the EB8 become an option as @Lbrdsoxfan mentioned without buying any additional APEX strips.

Get a Ranco temperature controller. It is more reliable than an Apex and will last the whole time that you reef. Apex are toys compared to the industrial grade Ranco.

Thank you very much for your help. I think I will go this route as I really want the redundancy of the Apex shutting the heaters down in case of a failure stuck on.
