How many dimensions is your flow pattern?

In the early days of reefing, we were blasting return pumps and powerheads in a single direction. On/off.

Now we've progressed to propeller and gyre style pumps. Most of us have pumps now going in opposing directions, but most of the flow is still only on an east/west axis. Corals get hit from the left or right.


If you were challenged to create this in an aquarium, how would you do it?
