I just was just wondering in a 5 gallon tank how would you go about cleaning the sand? A turkey baster ? Some kind of hose ? Snails ?

Gravel vac during a water change. Or small hose etc.

Snails or a clean up crew would also help in between water changes :)

I'd use a turkey baster too.

If you want to keep the sand ultra pristine then search on YouTube for videos on how to gravel vac an aquarium. Very easy to do as part of regular water change process.
