My hygger heater was rusting in the tank for at least 2 months, it's been tossed out as of today. Anyways I don't have a back up heating element but I do have one of those heaters that have an in-line controller. Could I plug that heater in the hygger controller with out any problems?

Separate question, could rust cause algae problems and corals to not be as happy as they should?

yeah that should be no issues at all! :) Set the in-line controller on your heater a couple of degrees higher than your hygger controller!

Example:
Heater - 80
Controller - 78

By doing this, the hygger controller will still be "in charge".

Corals does not like a too high concentration of iron in your water. Some types of green algae loves it though! I have had to actually dose iron in my refugium to make my chaeto grow better.

You can get decent iron test kits if you want to test for it- or you could do a couple of large water changes if you are worried about it.

Rust can cause all sorts of problems in reef aquariums. I suggest buying poly pads to help remove the heavy metals that are in your water.

So yes, it can easily cause your corals to not be happy. It will eventually kill them if there is no relief.

Where was this rust? What type of Hygger are you using? This interests me because I use their heaters.
Not really sure what is rusting but that definitely rust.
