Hi,

I was just wondering whether this Kenya tree and devils hand have some kind of tissue disease or a possible pest is in this tank. They have said that there is no pests or worms they’ve noticeable except some bristle worms. But they aren’t sure what to do. Whether the dead areas if they are dead should be cut out. All parameters are good. The tank was treated with a medicine as two of their clowns became sick when another fish was introduced. But that has since stopped a week or so ago and carbon was placed back in. Just wondering if anyone can ID what disease this is and provide guidance for them.

I'm sorry no one has responded yet - I don't have an answer for you, but I'm happy to bump the post and see if we can find someone who does.

I'm not experienced enough to help, but you might find more help is generated if you provide better information - Provide full tank pictures as well as additional pictures of the coral under full white light. Provide tank parameters, etc. The more you give the better response you'll get!

Both just look a little irritated IMHO. The devil's hand may be getting ready to shed. Mine gets some dark areas on it before it does. The sinularia looks fine to me. If you're worried tho, you could snip off the affected area with some sterilized scissors. Run some carbon and I think they'll be ok

Top - Devils hand leather
Bottom - Sinularia leather

are you sure the bottom is a sinularia?
It looks more like a nephtea. :thinking-face:

i would think by this definition its a Nephtea, or more precisely a capnella, from the ridges in the body.
Capnella: the main distinct trait shared with all types of capnella are the horizontal ridges in the body and next to no visible sclerites. If they are visible they are usually tiny specks not actual lines. No matter the color these lines are there. Lines can sometimes be seen in litophyton however the coral is still a bit stiffer and the sclerites larger and more visible.

added: the other distinct difference ishow the polyps appear when retracted.

I almost never could fully distinguish the two,,

OP: if that is a kenya tree, they are pretty much bullet proof, and under most conditions can even outlast your fish.

IF that bulb section is annoying you, like rc8t6353 states, you can snip it off... however i would recommend you do it in a bowl outside your tank, and then give the area you sniped a good clean with clean tank water.

With my experience, leather corals shed quite often, it’s like their growing, but keep in mind soft corals are very hardy but can literally melt into nothing if water is contaminated, what are you water parameters, Lights, and if you have a PAR scale what does it read??
