hi i have purchsed a Aqua One Nano Reef 35 Aquarium it came with a NANO SKIM AQUA ONE 40 PROTIEN SKIMMER I have no idea how this works can anyone help it would be most appreiated

Welcome.

That's a different one that not many of us use. It looks like it has a pump for the water and an air pump driving a wood airstone?

I would start by running the air pump at full, and adjust the water level in the skimmer so the bubbles are breaking toward the lower part of that cone.
