Old MP40W. What do I need, what can I get away with?

I bought 2 MP40W's today. They are OLD. White controllers.
I have learned that I have the old green wifi chipsets and for ~$20 I can update them to the black ones to connect to mobius.
But what can I use to connect to them now? Would I need a ReefLink device to talk to them without the upgrade or is there some app I can download?
Do I need to update with a QD driver board BEFORE I add the new wifi?
Does using a new QD driver board really make it quieter?

Drop some knowledge on me people. I bought OLD **** and now I'm confused.

Which white controllers? There were old white ones and REALLY old white ones. If the latter, I don’t think there is any upgrade path. Former used to be QD upgradable - not sure if anymore.
