It says coverage of 36x36 but it is overkill to put Kessil A500x over a 40 breeder? There are lenses that you can add on but I dont think they narrow coverage to make it slimmer. Would doing this just be a waste of money for that tank? I've heard such great things about these lights that I am intrigued.

Kessils are awesome, I use them on my tanks, however they create shadows, so supplemental lighting (T5s or bar lights) are going to be wanted. I run one tank off of a single A360X it is a Red Sea 200xl. then My 40 gallon breeder is ran with an A360X and an Aquatic Life T5 fixture. You will be much happier with this set up of lighting. I have grown any coral under them, including acros. Although it will be a little bit more expensive for the A360X with T5s, it is more versatile than just the singular A500X. Check the used market for them, as I got my A360X and T5 fixture for a measly $350 dollars compared to its brand new cost of just over $1,000 dollars.

i have one over a 25 lagoon and love it. narrow reflector so i can run it very high off the tank (~2 feet) . a 360 would have worked of course, but i like being able to run it at <50% rather than 100% so it runs cooler for longer lifespan.

If you do go with an A500X, here is a good used deal.
