Anybody have a a good idea of what gph Will be good for a 30 gal hex ?

depends what coral you want. Sps want high flow, while some lps and softiest not so much (my zoas, and lps hate high flow).

There's no happy medium?

Yes....get a powerhead that's adjustable. What comes to mind for me is an MP10. (I don't own any, but I think the newer Jebao's are adjustable.) I'd start with one....and if heavy SPS, you might need two.
