Just bought the ReefRun 9000 yesterday to replace a Varios-8 that was dead silent. Set it up this afternoon…LOUD!! Sounds like rocks are tumbling in it. I took it apart three times making sure I wasn’t missing anything. They’re advertised as silent.

I know they’re brand new but has anybody else encountered this?

Black vinyl tubing. It’s the same set-up I used with the Varios. I’m so shocked at how loud the pump is. And I made sure it wasn’t touching anything and that it was clean and that it had all o-rings in place. It’s crazy

Doesn't surprise me, the only good thing imo about red sea is their newer tanks and the reefmat.

It shouldn’t be loud. It is a Sicce DC pump, I have some extra 1" silicone tubing if you want to see if that quiet's it down. But I would say you have a bad pump. Did you get it from at 7 seas?
Do you think the 1” could make a difference?
It seems to have quieted down a bit but I e also turned the power down to 40%. I would have liked it to be higher, but it’s just way too loud when it’s higher. My Varios was DEAD SILENT. Even the Red Sea skimmer makes more noise that my reef octopus skimmer but it’s mainly the bubbling that I’m hearing. I’m just really bummed about this combo
Yeah, I did get it from 7seas

I use soft silicone tubing on all my pumps, only a few inches, but it does isolate the sound. Also did the pump come with suction cup feet also? You can try some filter material underneath the pump to see if that helps.

The only thing I can think of is maybe some air is trapped in the pump causing the impeller to sound like its cavitating. I'm sure anything that flows this much should purge itself but I have a smaller Sicce pump which can rattle for a while if I don't rotate it in the water to allow any trapped air out.
A long shot but there ya go.

Still loud with the new impeller. They sent me a 7000. In order for me to get the flow I needed, I had ti have the 7000 run at 100% which was just as loud as the 9000 at 60%. So I kept the 9000. The noise has either gotten better by a tiny bit or I have gotten used to it. But I can still hear it. I still go back and forth about going back to reef octopus. I loved the Varios pumps

Sounds like it’s a terminal issue then. That matches the vibe I’m getting from Redsea support (who have been great BTW, just obviously avoiding the elephant in the room).

Maybe you’ve got hearing damage, I already feel sick and have tinnitus after listening to my Redsea skimmer all day :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

My RedSea Reefrun 7000 also runs really loud. I have a Varios6 running right next to it (powering my manifold) and that unit is dead silent. I do not intend to get any RedSea or Sicce return pumps again.

Redsea are sending me a new impeller for my skimmer DC pump. However today I noticed there’s a circle forming on the pump body from the impeller rubbing on it. They say it’s not damaged but I would argue it is, as it’s boring a circle into the body!

If the impeller doesn’t fix the issue I’m returning the skimmer. Tempted to get rid of my reefrun 5500 and controller too because there’s no point having them without the skimmer.

I’ve put my AC Redsea skimmer back on the tank and it’s practically silent in comparison!

I had a Varios 8 on 3/5 level and it was dead silent. I regret selling it.

I also use a Ghl controller and wanted to have the skimmer turn off when the pH hit 8.4 but every time that happens, I have to manually turn the skimmer back on in the Red Sea app. It’s a waste.
