In short, yes. Otherwise is will clog. As a bio-media it shouldn't matter a lot because in theory the bacteria would handle everything. That said, with a pump pushing it, it can clog.

I would honestly remove the sponges and just let the detritus flow through as well.

Thanks ! Il'l remove the foam and drop them in my sump to seed my next build.
