One of my clowns suddenly has an opaque white bubble on her side. I’ve had her for 8 years and she and she is otherwise looking/acting healthy. She has a clutch of eggs about ready to hatch and looks ready to lay another one as usual. Ignore the rest of the white specs, its just blowing sand in the foreground stirred up by my goby.

I’ve never seen anything like this bubble thing. Any ideas?

  • Brief description of the issue you are observing and answers to the following questions:
    • How long have you had the fish with the condition?
    • Did you quarantine with medication when you first acquired the fish? (If Yes, which medication?)
  • Current water quality measurements
  • Clear photos of the issue taken using WHITE light and/or a short video of any behaviors (post in your response or on YouTube).
If you can help us by providing as much of the above info as possible, it will make diagnosing and providing recommendations for treatment MUCH easier! I’ve seen pictures of these from people’s aquariums, but I’ve never had one show up on any of my fish, so I’ve never seen a case of my own. I don’t know what causes them, but they are fluid filled vesicles (like a blister).

Thanks Jay. So no treatment necessary I assume?

Sorry, I just don't know of any treatment. I've had reports of fish dying from this issue, but they had many vesicles, not just one.

Here is a similar case, but no reported outcome for that fish:
